CVG’s Acoustics Lab, which opened in 2008, features the latest, state-of-the-art, measurement tools for testing both full vehicles and vehicle components. For sound and vibration measurements, a Brüel & Kjær (B&K) 53-channel PULSE analyzer system, featuring the only Spherical Beamforming System in the Western Hemisphere, is used. This device can be thought of as an ‘acoustical camera’ and is ideal for producing color images of the various noises entering the vehicle cab. This allows CVG to pinpoint the location of noise problems in order to provide cost effective solutions in a method not available from other Tier 1 suppliers. Noise leaks, such as from door seals, and squeaks and rattles are easily identified with the beamforming system. For in-vehicle recordings, the CVG Lab utilizes a HEAD acoustics binaural head and binaural microphone headset. These devices capture both the vehicle’s driver and passenger positions simultaneously to produce realistic recordings during various operating conditions (e.g., highway speed, changing gears, etc.). The sound recordings are used for benchmarking, target setting, and evaluating the effectiveness of new cab interior products such as floormats, headliners, and instrument panels.
